APEX + NETPLUS DISPLAYS

Madeline was teamed up with Netplus to create exciting windows and in-store displays for the launch of the new APEX trunks. The finished result was a first for Outerknown. Specialized windows at their Carlsbad, Malibu, El Segundo, and Stanford locations featuring netting, suspended trunks, floating imagery, and unique vinyl. The bays in-store featured exciting POP with Kelly Slater and newly designed “Touch Tanks” illustrating each stage of the Netplus process—turning fishing nets into innovative fabric.

THE POINT MURAL

After months of planning, Outerknown commissioned muralist, Nicole Poppell to paint the walls of its flagship store in El Segundo.

Responsibilities included: Researching and interviewing potential artists, checking in with Nicole throughout her design process, creating a timeline, booking travel, and coordinating with the retail team (the store remained shop-able and open while Nicole painted). Madeline also designed marketing pieces, planned a party for the mural’s launch, and converted pieces of her art into unique embroideries available at The Point only. It was a fun and successful event.

INDUSTRIAL GRAPHIC

Tasked to design a branded tee that is not just an Outerknown logo placed on a shirt, Madeline was inspired by workwear to create a graphic that is both wearable and cool, with  clear brand messaging. The industrial graphic has been her most successful design and one of the most profitable graphics in Outerknown history. Due to its success, it has expanded into accessories, labels, and new color waves over numerous seasons and more to come.

Graphics for exhibition marketing included pole banners, building banners, gallery vinyl, rack cards, print ads, digital ads, webpage updates, emails, gallery guides, merch, and branded gallery event signage.

Exhibitions include: Paul Simon, Roy Lichtenstein, Stanley Kubrick, Jim Henson, Notorious RBG, Sara Berman’s Closet, Ai WeiWei, and Black is Beautiful

Paul Simon

Paul Simon: Words & Music—a traveling exhibition organized by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum—illustrated how the legendary artist’s music has reflected social and cultural ideals. Inspired by Simon’s impact, Madeline incorporated sound waves/ripples into the main look and feel of the exhibition. Bright color helped pop black and white photos of Paul from over the span of his career.

Responsibilities: Create the look and feel of all exhibition marketing. Translate design to signage, merch, banners, and advertisements.

Summer Concert Series

In 2016 Skirball’s marketing department wanted to create a new look for their summer concert series to kick off its 20th season. Something more exciting than a photo of the venue that was fresh and unexpected. Madeline decided to create a minimalist drawing of the courtyard with bright color and clear branding. This look was a success and was reimagined 3 times during her career there and is still evolving even after she left. Along with the new look and feel, design responsibilities included print and digital ads, event signage, and merch.

Vintage Posters

Inspired by vintage ads, Outerknown wanted to create unique posters featuring a few of their brand ambassadors. These designs would be an interesting break in OK’s Instagram grid. The designs successfully captured viewers and encouraged engagement.
